Trade received from Baseball Card Breakdown

A while back Gavin at Baseball Card Breakdown had posted that he had purchased a Bowman Uncirculated Rookie card of Brady Quinn, and said that he had bought if for the card holder. I, of course, got in touch with him to trade for the card. It recently came with some other goodies.


We'll start with a few cards that can be used in my Mets Opening Day Starting Lineup project.

The Millan card will slot into the 1973 lineup. I will probably put the Seaver into the 1976 page, moving the card there into a different year. The Bonilla and Hernandez cards will go into their respective years where there are already placeholders. Those placeholders will fill extra slots where they are needed.


Of course it wouldn't be one of Gavin's trade packages if it didn't include a couple of his custom cards.

It is great that he's doing mini cards among his customs, and I love the Conforto photo with the Mr. Met baseball cap.

Opening a Fairfield repack

While on my Arizona trip last month I decided to pick up a Fairfield football repack while in a Walgreen's. It promised 75 football cards plus 1 pack. The "Jumbo Box!" packaging also stated that "1:4 CONTAIN A HIT!"


I had no expectations when opening this. I figured it would be nice to get a couple of Browns cards, and I figured that the set may bring back some memories of old sets and players. Let's look at what I got!

I'm not saying that this repack was rigged, but there was no way that 1990 Pro Set was going to lose at having the most cards in here. And, no, I haven't opened the pack. Maybe some other time.

2013 Topps Archives - Printing Plate Black #38 (#/1)

Yeah, I'm not going to let a printing plate leave my hands when I'm holding it in a local card store. Well, if it were way over priced I might, but I think it was at a fair price. Besides, I love the 2013 Topps Archives set with its older designs, and I love this wide-eyed photo of Travis Benjamin. And it isn't as though there is another one of these floating around. Pretty cool to pick up.


Not as rare as a printing plate, but a card of a way more accomplished player was found at my last card show from a new dealer that only pulled out his small stock of football when I asked if he had any.

2009 Donruss Threads - Century Legends Materials #10 (#/250)

I actually own another jersey card from a different insert set in 2009 Donruss Threads. The jersey in that card looks the same as this one. I'll assume that it was from the same jersey. The other card is also numbered out of 250. I wonder how many pieces they get out of a jersey, and how close these pieces might have been from each other.

Although it looks like the front of the Winning Materials card is scratched, that is how they are printed. Seems like a silly design feature to me.


I like die-cut cards so the badge shape is pretty cool for the Weeden card.

I was happy that a local store had both of the Unparalleled base cards for this set, and believe it or not, I actually think they scan better than they look in hand. They are quite shiny, and an employee at the store said that she felt like she was getting a headache from just sorting the cards that were opened. Oh, and as for the name, Unparalleled? Don't let it fool you, there are many parallel sets to be found.


The Kessler insert is shinier than the base cards.

I'll show this back of the Mingo card because I know people like his first name, and the back explains where it comes from.


While the card has a nice design, and shows the card number in a good spot that is very easy to see and sort, it really doesn't have too much information on it. From the card, I can't tell how long his career has been, where he went to college, how he came to the team, or any of his physical stats, all of which I look for when I look at a card.


Moving on from Unparalleled to a single card that I needed from this year's Donruss set.

2016 Donruss #393

Ricardo Louis has the most catches among rookie Wide Receivers for the Browns this year, but that is only because of the injury to Corey Coleman. I've mostly liked what I've seen from him this year but he does have to work on some of some of the drops that have happened.


Finally, the local store had also put aside a team set of all the veteran cards from this year's Score set, along with two of the this year's rookies. I'll show them as a group.

I like that the veteran's cards showed all three Browns jerseys, but the orange pants were nowhere to be seen. I think I still prefer the classic jersey, but it is nice to see all three here. Of them, I think I prefer the orange one that Duke Johnson is wearing.

Autographed additions to the collection

I have added a bunch of new autographed cards to my collection in the last couple of weeks through eBay, a local card store and one card at a local card show. (Hey, it surprised me that a new dealer had two Browns cards that I needed.)


Let's start off showing one that probably would have cost a pretty penny a couple of years ago but that I got shipped for just under the cost of a blaster.

2014 Score - Rookies Signature Purple #387 (#/5)

Okay, I'm really starting off with this card to see if it showing up as a thumbnail on other peoples' blog lists will create a bit of traffic here.


I know that Score isn't a high-end brand, and I know that Johnny's autographs have really dropped in price, but I was shocked to get one of his rookie autos numbered out of five for such a cheap price.


Once again, I will comment that I like his autograph. I don't know what it says, but I like it. I wonder how long it took him to develop it?

2000 Upper Deck - Game Jersey Autograph Gold #KJ-A

I own a few autographed Kevin Johnson cards, but he is the only Browns player that I own an autographed football of. I found it in a card store just outside of Syracuse and the owner there gave me a good deal on it since it had been sitting in his store for so long. I believe that I bought it for less than the value of the football.

An interesting thing about the numbering for the Topps Prime Colt McCoy card. It is CMC because there is also a Carlton Mitchell card in the set (which I already owned) that is CM. I wouldn't have expected that.


I now own 33 different Carlton Mitchell cards, of which 10 are autographed. A few years ago he was selected by the local Ottawa team in their CFL expansion draft. I kind of laughed when I heard that since I figured when he was picked I probably owned the most autographed Carlton Mitchell cards in the Ottawa area. In his 2014 season with Ottawa, if I recall while battling injuries, he caught 16 passes for 170 yards. He then reported to the Atlanta Falcons training camp in 2015 but didn't make the team.

The auction for these two on eBay set me back a whole $3.26 with free shipping. I'm not sure what depresses the market on these cards so much, whether it is because they are Browns cards, or because there are just so many different Greg Little autograph cards out there.


Sure, you might say it was because he wasn't a success befitting a second-round draft pick, but he did have 61 receptions for 709 yards and 2 TDs in his rookie season. His stats dropped in his second year to 53 receptions and 647 yards (with 4 TDs) but he was targeted on 25 fewer passes. Those aren't bad stats.


That being said, if you ask me my impressions of Greg Little, and I'll probably remember his third season where it seemed like he was always dropping the ball, and his stats suffered during that season (41 receptions for 465 yards and 2 TDs even though he was targeted five times more than in his second season.)


Oh well, I'm not going to complain since I don't mind picking his cards up cheaply.

I miss watching Travis Benjamin with the Browns. I never watched Dennis Johnson with the Browns. He was signed after attending 2013 training camp with the Texans, and then placed on the Browns practice roster. Just over a month later he was signed off that practice roster by the Texans.


And now, in the middle of this post, we come to the Vince Mayle section.

Well, let's see, the Topps Chrome autographs are all on card! Woo hoo!


The Vince Mayle part of my collection is now up to 53 different cards, of which 17 are autographed.


I open the odd pack or blaster of Panini Contenders but I generally have to count on others to get all my Browns and their draft picks. These were all ordered off the same seller on eBay, along with the three Topps Chrome Mayles and the Dennis Johnson above.

I am curious how much product the seller opened to get this many Browns autographs. I know they weren't the "hits" that will get you rich.

Honestly, with all the draft picks that the Browns had this year, I may have missed the Nile Lawrence-Stample card if the seller hadn't put "Browns" in the auction title. It made me look him up and see that he signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent, and was placed on Injured Reserve after being injured throughout preseason. We'll see if he can make the team next year.


Now the big question is, if I had only scanned the various autographs, how many could you have made out? I would have recognized a few from other autographed cards I have of them, but wow, it really strikes home how signatures have changed. And, really, I can't say anything, my former boss always told me that I should improve my signature to make it readable, and honestly, I haven't done so.

Envelope from Bob Walk the Plank

Tuesday night I came from my regular trivia night, where we were slightly distracted with all the election results streaming in, to find a nice bubble wrap envelope waiting for me from Matt at the Bob Walk the Plank blog. Now, I don't know how he could find a moment to send out packages amidst the bombing that he's receiving, but I eagerly opened the package to see what I would find!

Hey, look, Browns cards! Who would have guessed? Matt included a note that he had been hoarding Browns cards. I don't mind having people gathering Browns cards from their areas for me, and I'm sure the local sellers are thrilled that someone wants them.


A couple of nice combination relic cards, and a couple of nice autograph cards to add to my collection.


I really like the swatches used in the Upper Deck Premier card. All three players on the card played in the Pro Bowl following the 2007 season, with Edwards named as a reserve, and Anderson and Winslow named as alternates.


Josh Cooper has a nice autograph. I always like it when players add their uniform number to the autographs as it can make it easier to narrow down whose autograph you might have. Cooper was an undrafted free agent that the Browns signed before the 2013 season to rejoin his college quarterback, Brandon Weeden. He played in 11 games over two years with the Browns, catching 17 passes for 166 yards.

How about a number of Terrance West autographs? Okay!


Hey, one of these autographs is not like the other. What made West actually add the 'est' to his last name on the Panini Elite card? I don't think I've seen that on any of the other West autographs that I own.


Terrance West is now playing with the Baltimore Ravens, and knowing my luck will run all over the Browns tonight.


Still with the team is West's fellow 2014 rookie running back.

More Terrance West, along with another 2014 rookie no longer with the team. Again, a nice swatch for the Manziel part of the card. It is always nice to get cards from sets like National Treasures that I am very unlikely to buy in stores.

Again, I love the National Treasures card. The relic on the right of the card is smooth, shiny plastic. I wonder where it is from.

It will always be weird for me to see the number 19 on anyone other than Bernie Kosar. I hope Corey Coleman has a big night tonight against the Ravens.

Let's Go Mets! ...and Angels, Giants, Yankees and Phillies?!?!?

As I mentioned in a previous post, my final stop at Showtime Sports Cards was a brief stop between dropping my sister off at the airport, and heading to an Arizona Fall League game.


Along with the football cards that I've shown, I went through two rows of a Mets monster box just trying to grab some cards to use for my Opening Day Starting Lineup Project.

I bought about 60 cards, and could use three quarters of them, so I was pretty happy with that. It was funny that I grabbed cards of players like Mike Bordick, Fernando Tatis and Lastings Milledge because I couldn't remember if they had ever started for the Mets on Opening Day or not. They hadn't.

Beautiful day at the ballpark

I feel the just above freezing weather that I have outside and wonder why I don't live in Arizona with my mom. I'm getting warm just looking at this picture and remembering sitting outside for the game.


I was at the game cheering for the Scottsdale Scorpions, a team consisting of prospects from the Mets, Angels, Giants, Yankees and Phillies. Players would wear their own team uniforms but everyone wore a Scorpions cap. (It is black with a red scorpion on it. I bought one but forgot to take a picture of it for this post. Maybe I will add one in later.) They were playing the Peoria Javelinas, consisting of Padres, Orioles, Braves, Mariners and Reds.

Of course, as a football fan, and a Mets fan, I wanted to see Tim Tebow. I had read a lot of reports on his play, but wanted to see him myself in person.

His first At-Bat

Tebow singled up the middle in his first At-Bat.

I took this shot because the First Baseman is Chad Wallach, son of Tim Wallach who I saw play in Montreal many times. Wallach made a few really nice defensive plays at first.


Tim Tebow batted twice, reaching base the second time on a Fielder's Choice - he beat a double play ball out at first. He then tried stealing second with a little bit of an awkward slide, and was thrown out. He reached for his knee a bit as he stood, and after a discussion with a trainer was removed from the game.


Tickets were General Admission seats and only $8.00. The announced crowd for a Monday 12:30 game was 504 people. But, man, do I wish I could have attended more games. I'll have to consider visiting my mom in the Fall more often.


Another Mets player in the game that really impressed me with his speed was Champ Stuart.

He stole three bases during the game, including second and third in the same inning. And he wears his pants/socks properly. I'll have to keep an eye on him and may drive down to Binghamton to see him next year if he starts in AA.


Anyway, here are the Mets cards that I picked up.

Cards are not always committed to any given spot, but I'll definitely use cards as placeholders to fit different years where I need a player.


The Mazzilli card is being slotted into the CF spot of 1978, and the Howard Johnson into the 3B slot of 1985. The Foster and Hernandez cards are being used for their proper years.

Both 1989 cards are being slotted into 1987. The Upper Deck McReynolds is going to 1987 while the Donruss one is going to 1990. The cards being added to 1987 complete that page.

The Hubie Brooks card is being placed into his RF slot for 1991, while the Vizcaino goes to the SS slot in its appropriate year of 1995, completing that year.


Both of the bottom cards are being used for the set from a year earlier, Johnson for CF in 1996 and Olerud for 1B in 1997. It could be that the card pictures were taken from those seasons.

The Butch Huskey card is going into the 3B slot for 1997, while the Lance Johnson card goes into CF of the same year. I really like the Topps Gallery card.


The Brian McRae card fits into CF of its proper year of 1998, while the Derek Bell card slots into RF for 2000.

I can see that I would really enjoy the Upper Deck Vintage baseball cards too. Great photo.

Filling up the P and SS page of the 2002 starting lineup are the Leiter and Ordonez cards. The Floyd (LF) and Cedeno (CF) cards are being used for the 2003 page.

These cards are being used for Jeremy Burnitz as the starting RF for the 2003 team that also had Ty Wigginton at 3B.


The Cliff Floyd card is being used for his LF spot in the 2004 starting lineup, while Pedro Martinez only started one Opening Day for the Mets, and this card is being used to represent that start in 2005.

The Kaz Matsui card is also going into 2005 at 2B, while the Lo Duca card slides in the Catcher position for 2006. I recognize the Co-Signers design from football sets.

The top two cards jump into the 2008 starting lineup page while the bottom two go into the 2009 page. I really like the way the Upper Deck Spectrum card scanned.

The box had quite a bit of Allen & Ginter that I grabbed. All these cards are being used in their proper year.


A nice shot of David Wright. Although I would like to see it as a close up, I think it works fine in this set.

Went a little out of order with this scan. I'll be slotting the Lucas Duda rookie card into the 2016 starting lineup spot, while the Reyes card will go into the 2011 page. The bottom two cards slid into the 2012 lineup page.


Again, I like how the Davis card looks in the scan.


All in all, this brings my project just over the 50% mark. It is something fun, simple and cheap to do for now.
