Let's continue the series of posts showing cards of five players with only one card in my collection. I'm using sorting tools at The Trading Card Database to look through my collection on their site to see who only has one card, and then finding the first five names that I haven't posted yet. I'm also using the images from their site.

2018 Donruss Optic - Pink #113

Damion Ratley was a sixth round draft pick of the Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft. He played in thirteen games, starting three, during his 2018 rookie season. He had some nice moments during the season but will be in a fight for one of the last receiver spots on the team this year.

Damion Ratley has 93 cards listed on the Trading Card Database with cards in many sets. I've only managed to get this one so far, but have no doubt many will follow.

1963 Topps #22

I'm sure that most people don't know the story of Don Fleming. I can't remember when I first read about it, but I'm sure it was after I looked at the list of numbers retired by the Cleveland Browns, and found Don Fleming's #46 as one of them.

Don Fleming was originally drafted by the Chicago Cardinals in the 28th round (yes, 28th) of the 1959 NFL Draft.

Fleming convinced the Cardinals to trade him to the Browns before the 1960 season where he could play with his good friend, and fellow defensive back, Bernie Parrish.

The card back above shows that over the 1960-62 seasons, that Fleming had 10 interceptions. Pro Football Reference shows that he also had 4 fumble recoveries as well, and that Fleming was named a First Team All-Pro by the Sporting News for the 1962 season.

During the off-season, Don Fleming worked a construction job. While on the job, on June 4, 1963, Fleming was electrocuted, and died one week shy of his 26th birthday. Earlier in the day, the Cleveland Browns had announced that Fleming had re-signed for the upcoming season.

Fleming's death came seventeen days after the death of fellow Brown, Ernie Davis. The Browns retired both of their numbers in memorium.

This is Don Fleming's only mainstream football card. He also has cards issued by Kahn's Weiners, and the National City Bank in 1961.

2017 SAGE Hit #4

Everybody knows about the quarterback issues that the Browns have suffered since their expansion return in 1999. I hope, and expect, that Baker Mayfield will be the answer to those problem.

From 1999 - 2012, the Browns had no problems with their kicker. It was Phil Dawson. There was nothing to worry about. Then he left as a free agent, and the Browns kicking problems began.

The Browns used five different kickers in the four seasons before they drafted Zane Gonzales in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

As a draft pick, he was expected to beat out incumbent Cody Parkey for the kicker's job for the 2017 season. He did, and was 15-20 on field goals, and 25-26 on extra points during his rookie season. An undrafted free agent was brought in to compete with him for the 2018 training camp, but Gonzalez was expected to win the job, and did, starting the 2018 season as the Browns kicker.

Unfortunately, the start of the 2018 season did not go well for Zane Gonzalez. He had a possible winning field goal blocked in overtime during the season opener against the Steelers, and then he missed two field goals, and two extra points in a three point loss to the Saints in Week 2. He was waived the day after the Saints game.

Zane Gonzalez doesn't have any cards in a Browns uniform, but has 20 cards in the 2017 SAGE Hit set. I'm sure that I will eventually come across some of his other cards for my collection.

2007 SP Authentic #114 (#/1399)

I can't believe that it has been so long since Charles Ali played with the Browns.

An undrafted free agent, fullback Charles Ali made the Browns team in 2007 and played two seasons with them before being among the final cuts of their 2009 training camp. There was a coaching change between the 2008 and 2009 season, and I wonder if role players like fullbacks are changed more than normal when the coaches change.

The Trading Card Database lists this card, and a gold parallel as the only football cards for Charles Ali's career.

2018 Panini XR #134

Chad Thomas was selected by the Browns in the 3rd round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He suffered a groin injury in training camp, and played very little for the Browns during the 2018 season.

I've read many articles hoping that Thomas will step up and be a valuable contributor to the Browns this year.

There are over 100 Chad Thomas cards listed on the Trading Card Database. I'm sure it is just a matter of time before I add some of them to join this card in my collection.

2004 Upper Deck Reflections #272 (#/1150)

This turned out to be a pretty sad card to follow up my last post referencing the passing of Walt Michaels.

Bryan Hickman was signed by the Browns as an undrafted free agent following the 2004 NFL Draft. I've seen one online article that said that it was a well-regarded signing, and that he was one of the top undrafted free agents after the draft.

At first, I didn't see any reasons for his release, but sadly, his obituary says that his football career ended with a knee injury with the Browns. A Facebook post from a Kansas State Texans group (K-State people from Texas, not a sports team name) mentions that his passing was due to suicide.

Bryan Hickman has seven cards listed on the Trading Card Database, with four parallels to this card all listing him with the Cleveland Browns. The other two cards appear to be jersey cards that list him with the Kansas State Wildcats.

Bryan Hickman died at the age of 30, on January 3, 2012.

2007 Topps Total #24

Yes, I just showed this card two post ago, but one of the names came up next on my list when I was looking, so I'll show the card now and knock two players off on this post.

Kevin Shaffer was drafted in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, and played four seasons with the Falcons before signing with the Browns as a free agent in March 2006.

Shaffer started all 16 games at Left Tackle for the Browns in 2006, before moving to and starting at Right Tackle for 2007 and 2008 with the team. (A young draft pick named Joe Thomas took over from him at Left Tackle in 2007.)

After being released by the Browns in 2009, Shaffer signed with the Chicago Bears and finished his career with two seasons with the Bears.

This Topps Total card and its various parallels are the only football cards to be made of Kevin Shaffer during his career.

Hank Fraley was an undrafted free agent originally signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and then claimed by the Philadelphia Eagles on waivers in 2000.

Fraley's NFL playing career started with the Eagles in 2001, and he was the starting Center for the Eagles until an injury halfway through the 2005 season. He was then traded to the Browns on September 2, 2006, and was ready to start for them in their season opener on September 10th.

Fraley was the starting Browns Center for three seasons, and remained with the team for a fourth season in 2009 before being released in March 2010. He finished his career with one final season with the St. Louis Rams in 2010.

Fraley went into coaching in 2012, and currently works as an Assistant Offensive Line Coach with the Detroit Lions.

There are Hank Fraley cards to be found in the Topps Total sets from 2005 - 2007. This 2007 base card, and its parallels, are the only cards to show Fraley with the Browns.

1991 Pro Line - Wives #2

The back of the card says Browns, this is a Browns card for my collection.

In 1991, Pro Line started putting out cards. They had players wearing NFL Properties clothing for their cards, and they had autographs of each player's card to chase.

1991 Pro Line also had a seven card insert set of player's wives, and autograph cards of each to chase as well.

I don't own the autograph card, but do have this regular base card of Babette Kosar, the then wife of quarterback Bernie Kosar. They divorced in 2007.

Babette Ferre-Kosar became the Director of Development for the Memorial Cancer Institute in May 2018 for the Memorial Foundation in Hollywood, Florida.

2002 Upper Deck MVP #60

After being drafted by the Houston Oilers in the third round of the 1995 NFL Draft, Chris Sanders played with the Oilers/Titans franchise from 1995 - 2001.

Chris Sanders signed with the Browns in March 2002, but was released by the Browns in training camp. He then re-signed with the Titans at Thanksgiving, but did not play again in the NFL.

Along with this card, and its two parallels, Chris Sanders has other cards where he is listed as being with the Browns in the 2002 Upper Deck XL set (base card and one parallel), and the 2002 NFL Showdown First & Goal set. The NFL Showdown card shows him in a Browns uniform, while the UD XL set shows him in a Titans uniform.

1951 Bowman #37

I've shown this card before, but really didn't talk too much about Horace Gillom. This copy from the TCDB is in better condition than mine, but my copy is in good enough shape for me.

Horace Gillom was a fascinating player. He played for Paul Brown at Massillon High School, followed him to Ohio State, and then joined him again with the AAFC Browns in 1947 after his stints in the Army and at the University of Nevada. At every level, Paul Brown wanted the best players regardless of race, and Gillom was the third black player to join the Browns, after Marion Motley and Bill Willis in the team's inaugural 1946 season. (The Browns in the AAFC, and the LA Rams in the NFL, were the first two professional football teams to integrate pro football in 1946.)

During his Browns career, Gillom played at End on both offense and defense, and also punted for the team. He played for the Browns from 1947-56, and when he finished his career, his NFL average punting distance of 43.8 yards was second all-time behind Sammy Baugh's 45.1 average.

In looking up information about him, I came across a book that I'll have to buy (and have since bought), Andy Piascik's "The Best Show in Football: The 1946-55 Cleveland Browns". In it there is a passage that talks about how Gillom helped revolutionize punting. He stood further back than most punters, and that, along with his accurate directional punting, he pretty much introduced the element of hang time to punting.

Horace Gillom died in Los Angeles, at the age of 64, of a heart attack suffered while working as a security guard at a hospital. He was named to the Browns Legends in 2007.

Along with this card, there is a Horace Gillom card in the 1953 Bowman set that I need to acquire.

1991 Score #124

Although this card says Tony Blaylock, his Pro Football Reference page, his Wikipedia page and following football cards that were made of him all refer to him as Anthony Blaylock.

Blaylock was a fourth round draft pick of the Browns, out of Winston-Salem State University, in the 1988 NFL Draft. He played with the Browns through five games into the 1991 season when he was placed on injured reserve with a rotator cuff injury. He was picked up by the Chargers on waivers later in the 1991 season, and played with San Diego through the 1992 season before finishing his career with the Chicago Bears in 1993.

This is the only Anthony Blaylock card on the Trading Card Database that shows him as a Cleveland Brown.

1999 Giant Eagle Cleveland Browns #14

Lomas Brown is probably best remembered as a left tackle blocking for Barry Sanders with the Detroit Lions. Brown was the Lions first round pick, number six overall, of the 1985 NFL Draft. He played with the Lions from 1985-95, making the Pro Bowl with them from 1990-95.

After the 1995 season, Brown signed a three year, nine million dollar with the Arizona Cardinals, and made the Pro Bowl with them during the first season of that contract.

Lomas Brown signed a free agent deal with the Browns to join their 1999 expansion team. He only played one season with the Browns before moving on to the New York Giants for the 2000-01 seasons, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their 2002 Super Bowl winning season to conclude his eighteen season career.

The Giant Eagle Cleveland Browns set gives us the only Browns card of Lomas Brown's career. There is a gold parallel to this card that I will have to find.

1950 Bowman #79

I've actually written about receiving my Tony Adamle card as part of my Secret Santa gift last year.

To save people from looking up the past post, and to make this part of the post a lot easier, here is what I wrote then:

Tony Adamle started with the Browns in the AAFC in 1947, and played with the Browns through the 1951 season before leaving the team to go to medical school.

While still in school, Adamle came back to the Browns to play for the 1954 season, helping the Browns win their second NFL Championship. His agreement with the team was for him to be allowed to practice with the team only one time per week so that he could continue his studies. He retired after the 1954 season to continue his medical schooling and start his medical career.

(For those that recognize the Adamle name, he is the father of Mike Adamle, former NFL running back, sports broadcaster, host of the American Gladiators, and a General Manager for WWE Raw in 2008.)

This is the first Tony Adamle card in my collection. He also has a 1951 Bowman card for me to find.

2009 Press Pass SE #3

I received this card in a Cleveland Browns card lot that I purchased. I was surprised to see it.

Graham Harrell wasn't drafted by the Browns. He wasn't even signed by them after the draft. Instead he was invited to participate in the Cleveland Browns rookie camp in May 2009. He was not signed by the team, and instead signed a contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL.

Nevertheless, this card and a 2009 Philadelphia card show him on the front with Cleveland although he is in his college uniform, and there are autographed cards of him in a Browns uniform from the rookie camp in the 2009 SP, SP Authentic, Upper Deck and Upper Deck Exquisite Collection sets.

Graham Harrell made it to the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, appearing in four games in the 2012 season after spending the time from 2010 until then going back and forth between their roster and practice squad.

Harrell was signed by the Jets  on August 28, 2013, and appeared in one series with them in an exhibition game before being released on September 2, 2013.

After his playing career finished, Harrell went into coaching with Washington State from 2014-15, and North Texas from 2016-18. On January 29, 2019, he was hired by USC as their new Offensive Co-ordinator.

In a minor health update, this week I met with my surgeon at the six week mark of my surgery. He has referred me to rehab to stretch the tendon in my hamstring, but does not want me to work on strengthening it yet.

I am able to walk (limp) without my crutch, but the surgeon does not want me taking stairs normally yet. I am to continue climbing them by going up with my good leg, and then pulling the bad one up to the step before continuing with the good one again. Going down the stairs, I start with the bad leg, and then bring the good one down, and repeat...

I can sit in longer stretches now, for about between a half hour to forty minutes before I have to stand up for a bit. I'll probably try driving down to my PO Box in Ogdensburg sometime next week. I think that I should be able to manage the near hour long drive then.

I know that things are getting better but I'm still frustrated with the speed of it.

2002 Upper Deck XL #125

After his college career at TCU, Lenoy Jones started his NFL career with three seasons with the Houston and Tennessee Oilers from 1996-98.

The Cleveland Browns selected Lenoy Jones from the newly named Tennessee Titans in the 1999 NFL Expansion Draft, and played his final four NFL seasons with the Browns.

Along with this card, there is a Holofoil parallel version that I need to find. These appear to be the only two cards listed on the Trading Card Database to represent his career.

1993 Bowman #181

Former Florida Gator Del Speer was an undrafted free agent signed by the Browns before the 1993 season. He played in all 16 games of his rookie 1993 season, starting two of them, and the first eight games of the 1994 season with the Browns. I assume he was then released by the Browns but I can't find a transaction record detailing this. I did find that he signed with the Seattle Seahawks in December 1994, and played his last NFL game with the Seahawks shortly afterwards.

This appears to be his only NFL card.

1973 Topps #129

Looking for information on Rich Jackson, I found that he had an awesome nickname for a defensive player, Tombstone, and that he had a vicious head slap that he used during his career. (One article I read said that Deacon Jones credited Rich Jackson for developing the head slap. Another article said that both players claimed to have developed it.)

Rich Jackson started his career playing with the AFL Oakland Raiders in 1966, and the AFL/NFL Denver Broncos from 1967 into the 1972 season when he was traded to the Browns. He was named as a first team All-Pro from 1968-1970, and articles talk about him being a Hall of Fame player before suffering a knee injury in 1971.

The back of the card was a bit optimistic as his career ended after the 1972 season, and this card is the only one to represent his stint with the Browns.

1992 Score 512

After being drafted by the Browns in the seventh round of the 1992 NFL Draft, Selwyn Jones spent the 1992 season on injured reserve.

He returned to the Browns for the 1993 season and started the season strong with two interceptions in the first week of the season, and one in the second week.

Selwyn Jones was released by the Browns during the 1994 season, and signed with New Orleans. After finishing the 1994 season with the Saints, he finished his career with two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

From looking on the Trading Card Database, this appears to be Selwyn Jones' only football card. I find this surprising since he did play in 47 games between the 1993 and 1996 seasons and more players seemed to get cards then.

1954 Bowman #99

Finishing off this post is my solo card of Harry "Chick" Jagade.

As you can see on the back, Jagade started his career with the Baltimore Colts before going to the Browns. His one season with the Colts was while they were in the AAFC. His Browns career consisted of three seasons from 1951-53, which means that this card is out of date. He played the 1954 and 1955 seasons with the Chicago Bears.

This is the only Chick Jagade Browns card listed on the TCDB. He also had one Leaf college card with the Indiana Hoosiers that preceded his pro career, and one Bears card in 1955. In addition, he also had a card in the 1955 Sport Magazine Fan Club mail in card.

Chick Jagade passed away at the age of 41 on November 24, 1968.

It has been a while since I posted, not since before my surgery, so here is a health update.

My surgery happened on May 13, and went well. The small fragment of my hip bone that broke off with the tendon was able to be reattached with two screws, and everything else was stitched together with dissolvable stitches.

I had my first follow-up appointment with my surgeon on May 28, and he was very happy with my progress, but told me to pretty much keep doing what I was doing, which was pretty much just lying around.

I was able to stand, but if I was going to bend my hip, I had to bend my knee at the same time so that I didn't put strain on the hamstring. I really couldn't sit, which of course meant that I couldn't drive, which of course kept me mostly confined to the house. I was pretty frustrated. I was able to semi-sit on the couch, with my leg bent, so at least I wasn't lying down all the time.

My friends were great, though, and really helped out. I could recline the passenger seat and pretty much lie in the passenger seat of someone else's vehicle. It was better if it was a SUV type vehicle that I could step up and lower myself down from. They took me to get groceries, and as I was able to stand, I sang in my choir's last four concerts, even though it really tired me out.

I am now able to sit upright for a few minutes at a time, and it seems to be getting longer as time passes. I can sit in recliners, with my legs and feet up. (Too bad I don't own one.) However, this did allow me to go see Rocketman in a theatre with recliner seating.

I can pretty much walk on straight levels without a crutch, but I still need one to go up and down stairs. I don't really have strength in my injured leg. My next appointment with my surgeon is June 25. I'm hoping that I'll be able to drive before then.

One of my friends drove down to my PO Box and collected my mail yesterday, so I have some new cards to show. Since I can sit for a few minutes at a time, I should be able to scan cards for some new posts in the next few days.

1976 Topps #219

Most of Van Green's information can be found on the card back above. He was drafted in the sixth round of the 1973 NFL Draft.

Along with the games listed on the back of the card, he played in the first game of the 1976 season with the Browns, before finishing his career with the Bills from week 3 to 7 of the same season.

This is his only football card listed on the Trading Card Database.

2002 Upper Deck XL #127

Raymond Jackson was drafted by the Bills in the fifth round of the 1996 NFL Draft. He was selected away from the Bills by the Browns in their 1999 expansion draft, and played three seasons with them.

This is a 2002 card, and Raymond Jackson remained with the Browns during this season, but as the Player Development Coordinator from 2002 - 2004.

According to the Trading Card Database, there is also a Holofoil parallel to this card. Other than that he has no other cards listed on the database.

1993 Playoff #125

An undrafted free agent out of Ohio State, Mike Tomczak was originally signed by the Chicago Bears in 1985, and played with them through the 1990 season.

After playing with the Green Bay Packers in 1991, Tomczak was signed by the Browns after Bernie Kosar broke his ankle against the Dolphins in Week 2 of the 1992 season. Todd Philcox started the third Browns game of that season before Tomczak came in to start the next eight games until Kosar was able to return.

As you can see on the back of the card here, Tomczak signed with the Steelers at the end of the season and remained with the Steelers through the end of the 1999 season.

Tomczak being in a Browns uniform makes this a Browns card for my collection. I think this is the only card that shows him in a Browns uniform.

2000 Leaf Limited #242 (#/1500)

A fifth round pick of the Browns in the 2002 NFL Draft, Anthony Malbrough only played one season with the Browns. After that he continued his football career with one season in NFL Europe and then eight seasons in the CFL.

Pro Football Reference lists him as being the brother of former NFL player, and former Brown Jerry Ball.

From his rookie season, Malbrough has a Limited Series parallel to this card. I thought that this was the only set that represented his stint with the Browns, but in looking at his page on the Trading Card Database, I see that he was photographed in a Browns uniform in the 2002 Pacific set, with his team being listed as the Houston Texans. That card has three parallels. It looks like that gives me more cards to chase.

1961 Fleer #14

Gern Nagler has an interesting history with the Browns. Although he was drafted by the Browns in the 14th round of the 1953 NFL Draft, as you can read above, he was traded to Baltimore before the season began. The trade was historic. It was the largest trade at the time, with fifteen players changing teams - ten from the Browns to the Colts, and five going back to Cleveland. It is still the largest trade to involve only two teams. The only larger trade, the Herschel Walker trade, involved three teams - the Cowboys, Vikings and Chargers.

Nagler was waived by the Colts and signed by the Chicago Cardinals where he played five seasons, missing the 1954 season to military service. He played the 1959 season with Pittsburgh before finally coming back to the Browns where he finished his career playing in the 1960 and 1961 seasons.

This is Gern Nagler's only mainstream Browns card. He also has two oddballs from 1961 with a Fleer Wallet Picture, and a National City Bank card.

As an update to my torn hamstring - originally I was supposed to have surgery on it today, but due to a small mix-up with the various hospital offices, my surgery was postponed until next Monday morning. I just want to get it over with so I can start the rehab and get to the point where I can sit normally again.

2000 Pacific #96

Zola Davis only played the 1999 season with the Browns. He was released by the Browns during the 2000 training camp.

There are three parallels to this card to find, and then Zola Davis also had a XFL card in 2001.

1962 Topps #26

Here is what I wrote in a June 25, 2016 post when I picked up this Howard Cassady card:

This is the only Browns card for Howard "Hopalong" Cassady, who played in 5 games with the Browns after being traded to them from the Lions just before the 1962 season. He had 7 punt returns and 10 kickoff returns for the team in those games. I don't know who is in the action photo - Cassady wore 40 with the Browns, as he did with the Lions. (If that is a Browns player with the ball, and it is number 10, before 1962 the number was only worn once by a Browns player, in 1957 by quarterback John Borten.)

As it turns out, I was wrong when I said it was Cassady's only Browns card.

The 1962 Post Cereal card shows Cassady in his Lions uniform, and the card has his team listed with the Lions, but under the text of the card it says that he was traded to the Browns. That means that I have to find a copy of that card now.

As well, there is a card of him in the 1962 Kahn's Wieners set in a Browns uniform. I don't think that I've seen any 1962 Kahn's cards in person.

Further looking into the inset photo. If it was from the 1961 season, the year before the card, then if it is a Browns player, the only two players that wore a number starting with a 1 are quarterbacks Milt Plum (16), and Len Dawson (18). I really don't know who is in that photo.

2000 Advance Auto Parts Cleveland Browns

Marquis Smith was drafted by the Browns in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft out of California.

He played 46 games, starting 20 of them, over his Browns career, from 1999-2001.

I am not aware of any other Browns football cards of Marquis Smith, and I think that reinforces why I love oddball sets so much.

1952 Bowman Small #74

Joe Campanella was drafted by the Browns in the 3rd Round of the 1952 NFL Draft. With a quick search, I wasn't able to find out how he went from the Browns to the Dallas Texans, but according to Pro Football Reference, Campanella played all 12 games of the 1952 season with the Texans, before finishing his playing career with the Baltimore Colts from 1953-57.

The back of his card mentions that he plans a career in construction after his playing career ended. He didn't do that. He went into the restaurant business instead. He partnered with Alan Ameche in opening the Ameche's Drive-In restaurants, and after leaving his partners, he started his own restaurant, Rustler Steak House.

After the Colts fired their General Manager in 1966, they approached Campanella with a job offer as Vice-President and General Manager of the Colts. Campanella accepted the position, wanting to work with the Colts coach, Don Shula.

Sadly, in February 1967, Joe Campanella was playing handball and became short of breath and asked to stop playing. He didn't make it off the court, and died in Shula's arms at the age of 36.

In 1952, Bowman had two football sets, of small and large cards. I still need to find the large card.

Other than these 1952 Bowman cards, Joe Campanella had a 1956 Topps card with the Colts, and then a reprint of the 1956 card along with a gold parallel in the 1994 Topps Archives 1956 set.

1954 Bowman #84

Another nice old Browns card of a player that wound up never playing for the Browns.

John Bauer was drafted by the Browns in the first round of the 1954 NFL Draft. He was then involved in a six player summer trade with the Green Bay Packers that featured quarterback Bob Garrett going to the Packers and quarterback Babe Parilli going to the Browns. The Packers then traded Bauer to the New York Giants in September 1954, and he played his only two NFL games with the Giants that season.

This appears to be his only football card.
