Mail call from Bob Walk the Plank

The other day I went to my home mailbox and found a nice bubble-wrap envelope waiting for me. Not expecting anything, I looked at the return address to see that the package was sent by the head honcho of the Bob Walk fan club in the collecting community, Matt from the Bob Walk the Plank blog.

Here is a selection of cards from the package.

We'll start with some Hall of Famers.

Top (l-r): 2014 Panini The National Convention - Legends #4; 2017 Panini Contenders Draft Picks #50; 2017 Panini Elite Draft Picks #50
Bottom (l-r): 2015 Score - Gridiron Heritage #6; - Gridiron Heritage #16

Although this year's National Convention in Cleveland is the same weekend as a major game convention (GenCon) that I go to each year in Indianapolis, I'm going to find some way to get there for a day. I wonder how many Browns promotional cards I will have to try to find. (If anyone else is going, please consider me for any that you get.)

I like the college cards of Jim Brown. Too bad they used the same photo for both sets. The Panini Elite card is pretty much foil so didn't scan well.

Whenever I see a checklist includes a Paul Warfield card, I have to wait and see the card to see if he will be shown as a Brown or a Dolphin. I'm always happy to see them be Browns cards.

We'll follow these up with a couple of cards of a Future Hall of Famer that I hope comes back to play next year.

L-R: 2015 Topps #295; 2017 Panini - Panini Day Football #25

I hadn't seen any cards, or a checklist, from what is labelled on the back as Panini Day Football so I was thrilled to get this Joe Thomas card. Panini has put out so many promotional sets (Black Friday, Father's Day, Player of the Day, etc.) that I seem to be discovering new ones all the time. I don't see them in local stores so they are always nice to get.

L-R: 2015 Donruss #266; 2015 Donruss - Press Proof Blue #233 (#/99); 2016 Donruss - Press Proof Blue #307

I like the art on the Barkevious Mingo card, and it was the last card I needed to complete the base 2015 Donruss team set.

I don't get the Donruss Press Proof inserts. In 2015, Donruss had five different Press Proof parallels - Purple, Blue (#/99), Silver (#/25), Gold (#/10), Black (#/1). I know they need parallels, but why call them/make them Press Proofs? I would think that if I were actually testing the printing presses, it wouldn't be in such convenient numbers, and that I would probably test them all in equal numbers. I mean, I'm going to buy the Browns because I need them for my collection, but I don't actually believe that they are press proofs no matter what they call them.

Top: 2015 Panini Prestige - Extra Points Blue #69
Bottom (l-r): 2015 Topps Field Access - Blue #33; 2015 Topps Field Access #146

I really wish the Browns would have kept Josh McCown last year as a veteran starter, ready to mentor the younger quarterbacks, instead of just offering him a position on the coaching staff. He had a great season with the Jets and I'm sure he would have helped the Browns avoid a winless season.

The two Field Access cards bring me up to four of ten base cards for the Browns team set so I was very happy to see them... Ummm, wait a second.

Okay, I've modified the caption as after looking at the cards scanned side by side, I went to look up the set information at the Trading Card Database. The card to the left is a Blue parallel, so I only have three of the parallels for the base set. I think. When I put these in my 2015 binder I will take a look to see if I got the other cards right. And I may have to look through my doubles to see if I have either of the other two I owned in doubles, and whether they match or not. I guess that is what happens when you're not familiar with a set and when parallels aren't numbered. I should have noticed the blue but missed it. Ugh.

L-R: 2016 Panini Rookies & Stars #177 and #188; 2016 Panini Rookies & Stars - Longevity #130 (#/75)

Here is another set that I need a lot of cards from. The two base cards bring me up to seven of the sixteen cards for the team set, and this is my first Longevity parallel.

I was kind of saving the "hits" for the end of the post but since these go with the same set...

2016 Panini Rookies & Stars - Star Materials One-Star #12 (#/150)

You can see that Matt sent me two of the same insert card. Since I don't feel that I can really track down the other 148, I'll just find the second one a good home.

I know that I've bought the same insert card in doubles quite a few times, sometimes even at the same card show or in the same store. Nothing worse than getting home and sorting your purchases and finding out you did that. But I appreciate Matt doing it for me!

Top Left: 2016 Panini Contenders - Round Numbers Holo #19 (#/99)
Top Right: 2016 Panini Prizm Collegiate Draft Picks - Prizms #177
Bottom: 2016 Score - Toe the Line Gold #13

Some nice parallels to add to my collection. I previously owned the base cards for the top two cards, but this is the first Toe the Line card for my collection.

Taking a look at a gallery of Toe the Line cards, I think this is one of the better ones. You can see the receivers feet and the ball in hand, and the back of the card actually describes the game that it was caught in.

L-R: 2016 Panini - Chivalry #58 (#/199); 2016 Panini - Knight's Templar Foil #201

Here are a couple of different parallel sets from the 2016 Panini set. I hadn't seen any of the Chivalry parallels before so this was cool to see.

I really wonder at how Corey Coleman might turn out after the injuries in his first two seasons. The receiving corps could be interesting with Josh Gordon back and any possible free agents they might sign before the draft. It looks like Sammy Watkins and Allen Robinson will be available.

Top (l-r): 2017 Donruss #8; #26; and #279
Bottom (l-r): 2017 Donruss Optic #140; 2017 Donruss Optic - Holo #78

Moving on to 2017 cards, here are five cards from Panini's Donruss brands. In general I've liked the Donruss sets that Panini has put out, but I really don't see the need for the Optic set. However, I guess if Topps has Chrome with their same design, I guess Optic copies the Donruss design. I know that Prizm seems to be their Chrome, but it didn't copy another of their sets. Or, I'm just overthinking this and it is a cheap design way of putting out another set for all the collectors to buy and to help fulfil their exclusive card contract.

L-R: 2017 Panini Classics #297; 2017 Panini Rookies & Stars #212; 2012 Panini Unparalleled - Lime Green #45

I think that Panini Classics might be my favorite set that Panini has been putting out the last couple of years. The only problem with it is that the rookies are still with their college teams and not their pro teams. At least the Rookies & Stars card beside it allows us to see Njoku in his Browns uniform.

Very bright parallel from the Unparalleled set.

On to "hits" found in the package.

L-R: 2015 Topps Field Access - Autographs #64; 2016 Panini Spectra - Neon Blue #212 (#/99)

This is the second Field Access autograph of Nate Orchard that I have received from a blogger recently. Gavin sent me one in January. I'll find a good home for this one.

The checklists that I looked at called the Higgins Spectra card Neon Blue. I was looking for Blue Bubbles or something like that.

Top: 2016 Panini Phoenix #234 (#/249)
Bottom: 2016 Panini Playbook - Hot Routes #12 (#/199)

Both Phoenix and Playbook are sets that I haven't ever bought sealed. I'm sure a lot of the people opening those boxes were not happy to pull these Browns but I like having them out there for my collection.

Top: 2015 Donruss - Elite Rookie Signatures #ERS-VM
Bottom: 2017 Panini Rookies & Stars - NFL Authentic #10

I probably should have put the Vince Mayle card on the bottom so that the post could have ended with a Vince Mayle autograph that I needed. There are still so many of his cards out there that I need.

Anyway, Matt, thanks a lot for sending this package during a time when you had to have been bombarded by Wes. The cards were greatly appreciated and I'm looking at cards that I haven't yet packaged to hit you back with. I'll try to get them out in the next few days.
