Upon opening the box, I discovered that this box shared a common trait with many of the Topps Chrome cards that I have in my collection - the cards are curled. The packs inside the box are each curled. I hope that the cards are fine. I expect them to be - chrome cards tend to be a little less fragile than regular cardboard.
The base set is 90 cards. I will list the cards from each pack in this break and show selected scans from each pack without duplicating a card. Hopefully you'll see the whole base set.
Sit back, 36 packs will make this a long post. Oh, and there will be a contest at the end.

Here are a couple of backs:
Yes, I took the Cleveland Stadium back because it mentioned the Browns. A nice card to pull in my first pack.
I'm not going to show the backs for the regular cards unless something grabs my attention. These were just to give a quick example. The complete card gallery of the set, including the backs, can be found at the link at the bottom of yesterday's post.
I can't say that I was really pleased to find that the Species promo card that I pulled was one of the seven cards in the pack. As a "special" card in the pack, I'll show it, and its back.
For what it is worth, I liked the movie.

The box produced one completed base set, and 85 of 90 cards towards a second set (missing card numbers 28, 34, 63, 77,85).
The early Diamond Cover that I picked up was the only one I got, and I pulled 3 of the 6 Phil Rizzuto MagnaChrome cards. (I just went on COMC and picked up my missing two Diamond Covers and 2 of my 3 missing MagnaChrome cards.)
CONTEST TIME:
I was hoping to offer a full base set of these cards in the contest but the box didn't agree with me so it looks like it will have to be a near set. I'm sure to throw some other stuff in for the winner.
To enter, I just want you to comment telling me your favorite card from the set. If you want to say why, it would be fun to see the reasoning but it isn't necessary.
I'll make a list and random it three times to determine the winner on Saturday.
Lot of cool cards. My LCS had 1 box of this a few months back that I almost picked up for $15. I now wish I had, love the history. I enjoyed most of the cards but really like the cards of the old ball parks. As a Giants fan have to go with the Polo Grounds card.
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoy uniforms, so the hat advertisement card is probably my favorite. I think it's so cool comparing that to the advertisements now.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is great. I have a single or two from this, but in no way did I realize it was such a diverse set.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite card has to be Scooter with the WPIX microphone. That's how I'll always remember him...announcing games and going off on tangents!
Thanks for the contest!
Thanks for sharing the set packs. I've always loved the Casey at the Bat poem, I read it to my students every Spring on Opening Day.
ReplyDeleteThe Lorillard Chicago BBC and the #26 Chicago White Stockings are tied for my favorite! I would be happy to take all of the doubles of those particular cards off of your hands, if I should win. They'll be boons to my CATRC - I was totally unaware of their existence!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love those stadium cards..
ReplyDeleteHonestly, if for some strange and unknown reason I won, I'd only want the stadium cards..
My favorite is card #38 Tobin Lithographers because:
ReplyDelete1) It's a card of one of the better, and less talked about, 19th-Century players.
2) That's one crazy caricature.
3) Dude's name is Glasscock, and you won't find a less-mature nearly-50-year-old-guy than me...
What a cool product! I've never heard of it before. I'll also have to go with Casey at the Bat as my favorite.
ReplyDeleteBoy, that sure isn't just another typical card set! I think my favorite is the Ft. Wayne AAGPBL player, although I wish they could have found out and listed her name. (It does say it's from 1949, so I don't think it's someone from the movie.) I also dig the New York NL content like the John McGraw and the Giants scorecard.
ReplyDeleteI've received a card or two in the past. The card that immediately caught my attention was #47 Japanese Poster. Great looking card and definitely one I'll be looking to add to my Japanese binder.
